Summer may not be such a pleasant time for us, but there are so many plants that bloom wonderfully in the scorching heat and the direct sunlight of Indian summer. The summer season spreads from March to May with monsoon season beginning in June. Even though gardens require comparatively more nurturing and care during summers, the variety of flowers that bloom in this particular season makes it worth the effort. If you are growing summer flowers this season, here are some flowering plants that will give your lawn a magical look like never before!
1. Balsam: These stunning annuals are flowers that bloom in summer in India. It is a thing of great attraction for children and adults alike. It blooms in different hues of white, violet purple, rose pink, red, and mauve, single & double.
2. Cosmos: Feathery, light, soft foliage, and star-like flowers, the most attractive feature of the plant is its delicacy and smooth texture. It flowers in white, shades of pink rose, and mauve. Its orange-coloured variety is the most popular.
3. Gaillardia: If you're growing summer flowers, these are some that you cannot miss out on! With a very long blooming period of about four months, these stunners are some of the most wonderful and subtle additions to gardens. Common varieties are a combination of yellow and brown-red colour.
4. Gomphrena: A popular ‘everlasting’ flower, easy to grow, produces a mass of small globular flowers. The typical colour for these Indian seasonal flowers is purple. Others also include orange, pink, and off-white.
5. Portulaca: Called a 4-o-clock flower, these summer flowers in India are known for their adaptability to very hot conditions and their heart-shaped petals. They open when the sunshine is bright and close as in the evening. They bloom in the most gorgeous colours of yellow, scarlet, crimson, rose, pink, and magenta- single & double.
6. French Marigold: These wonderful summer flowers in India are trendy, comfortable to grow, make for excellent cut flowers, and are as efficient as carpet and edging plants. Typical colours for this flowering plant are yellow, orange, lemon dark brown, and combinations of these shades.
7. Nasturtium: Excellent for rockery and covering wasteland, plant loves poor soil. Suitable for hanging baskets also. Flowers are yellow, orange, maroon, scarlet, single & double.
8. Sunflower: A very distinctive and attractive plant, as flower heads stand out uniformly much above the foliage in one direction. Iconic bright yellow colour with a black centre. These plants are good at withstanding extreme temperatures. It is important to note that they are not to be over-watered, as this loosens the soil and can weaken the plant.
9. Verbena: A beautiful perennial with a large compact head of flowers on tall, bushy plants. Flowers are white, crimson, purple, magenta, and blue in single colour or contrasting with white centres.
10. Zinnia: Very easy to grow, exquisite for borders, pots, and blooms for an extended period. Flowers of various colours- white, rust, dark brown, maroon, copper red, yellow, available in single and double. Their easy culture, heat tolerance and coloruful mid to late summer show, blooming hard when other annuals are spent, make them well worth exploring. 11. Marigold: These bright flowers are a perfect choice to add colour to any garden. The colour of marigold varies from light yellow to golden brown. It’s a common flower that is used for various purposes, including religious and medicinal. The pigment extracted from the flower can be used for food coloring. Even better, marigolds tend to keep pests away, so you can plant them near flowers that are eaten by bugs and use them as a natural and beautiful form of pest control.
12. Lotus: Lotus is a common water plant and is the national flower of India. Lotuses are generally available in shades of bright pink and white. One of the characteristics of the lotus is that its petals open by dawn and close down slowly from afternoon to evening. This is a delicate flower that will surely be a fun and colourful addition to any garden.
13. Roses: These romantic flowers will add cheer to any garden in summer. Though they need that little extra care, these flowers are perfect for summer. If given proper care, they bloom all season long. Roses tend to attract quite a few pests; hence placing marigolds alongside can help greatly for pest control.
14. Hibiscus: These gorgeous flowers are often associated with the tropics because of their lush, full-bodied bloom. Hibiscus plants can get quite big, so plant them in an area where they’ll have plenty of room to grow. As long as a hibiscus is in direct sunlight, it will bloom and grow all season long, and come up stronger year after year.
15. Musk Rose: The musk rose grows throughout India. This plant clusters at the end of its branches producing gorgeous and fragrant white flowers. The musk rose starts to bloom in May. Dark rose hips, ranging from purple-brown to dark red, form when the flower finishes blooming. Its beauty can easily light up any garden.
16. Lilies: One can admire lilies for their weatheriness. They do not need much to survive in extreme weather conditions. If the sun is too strong, they let the leaves dry, but the bulb remains conscious of life. It forgives the sun, and blooms again with ease whenever it feels safe enough to come out of its harsh surroundings.
17. Petunias: These are some of the most popular flowers among gardeners. They are quickly growing and blossom beautifully. They are found in pink, purple, red, white, and yellow colours. They are a perfect choice for hanging baskets and planters. To add some cheer and colour, you can place them between shrubs or hang them around the garden.
18. Pansies: Pansies are good flowers for sowing annually. They offer a palette of colours for any season in your garden. They are good for containers, borders and ground covers as they provide a lot of grace to the garden.
