Parenting A Pet

Once afraid of dogs, Jaishree is now so fond of her pets and even the strays that she dreams of opening a shelter for street dogs once she is established in life…

My name is Jaishree, and I am a student. My story of pet parenting started when I met my first pet dog, Kaalu. I remember how scared I was of dogs. Whenever I saw one, I used to take a longer route instead of the shorter one until I met him.

I still remember that it was a rainy day when an unknown man brought him to our house. He said it was his puppy and asked if we could keep him until he returned in the evening. My mother agreed. He was so cute, with his eyes staring at me. I was so scared to even touch him. As days went by, the man never came back and my parents decided to keep him as our pet, naming him Kaalu.

Gradually, I began to love him a lot. When I came home from school, he would be so happy, jumping all over me, his hair sticking to my clothes. One day, as he was walking, suddenly he collapsed. We immediately took him to the vet. The doctor said that he could never walk again because his limbs were deteriorating.

I felt my heart pounding so badly. However, with good treatment and care, he was able to leave the disease behind and now he is an 8-year-old handsome boy. We just celebrated his birthday. Today, I have two more dogs (Jugnu and Sinchu) and 7 cats. I find solace in their fur and love. I can't imagine a day without them being around. Although it is a little difficult for us because we cannot travel much, especially on long trips, it's completely worth it in front of those loving eyes.

Kalu is getting old and sometimes I feel sad to see that, I can do nothing but provide all of my pets with a good diet. Currently, I am also providing for stray dogs with my parents. My dad, being a dog lover himself, visits dogs every night and gives them food. It breaks my heart to see people hitting them; they have feelings too. They are living organisms and every species that God has made has an equal right to live. One day I will open my dog shelter once I become financially independent and can provide for them.

I wish for my pets and stray animals to live a healthy and peaceful life. This is the story of my little bundles of joy.
